Mezzo-Mezzo
One of the most embarrassing situations for every artist is the moment when they are asked the staple question (seemingly innocent but always slightly tinged with a note of accusation): “What was the idea behind your piece of art?” Usually, as a consequence, the author is asked to outline their “ideological background,” i.e. to invigilate, willingly or not, their work. The seemingly easy, or even childish, question is so difficult to answer because it is already belated when it is asked – the artist’s work, not always predictable, nor carefully planned – has already run its course.
